The XYZ portal has reported on the current, challenging situation of Media Markt Polska in the face of growing competition, as well as the planned acquisition of its parent company – Ceconomy – by Chinese logistics giant JD.com.
Just a few years ago, Media Markt was among the leaders of the Polish electronics retail market. Today, despite restructuring and digital transformation efforts, the company requires fresh capital. Meanwhile, JD.com – a retailer with USD 159 billion in sales and a top‑ranking spot in the Fortune Global 500 – is planning to enter the European offline market. This move could significantly shift the balance of power, including in Poland.
Tomasz Stamirowski, Managing Partner at Avallon MBO, was asked for comment and pointed out that a global player of this scale and with such technological advantage presents a serious challenge for smaller companies in Poland and across Europe. And it’s not just about electronics – JD.com’s wide product range could impact many other sectors as well. He also highlighted that the growing dominance of Chinese companies in both retail and logistics is another blow to the competitiveness of European distributors and manufacturers.
While consumers may benefit from a broader selection and lower prices, European producers and distributors will have to face competition where the playing field is not always level.
